Veterinary Medicine International: http://www.sage-hindawi.com/journals/vmi/

Veterinary Medicine International is a journal that publishes original research articles as well as review articles in all areas of veterinary medicine. It is published by Hindawi Publishing Corporation which is a rapidly growing academic publisher with more than 300 Open Access journals covering a wide range of academic disciplines. The publication’s purpose is to disseminate research findings. This magazine is peer-reviewed and it has an open access. The articles of Veterinary Medicine International are reviewed for example via the following databases: PubMed,Veterinary Science Database. Researchers and experts are either the authors of the texts or the intended audience. The source of information is reliable because the articles undergo blind reviews by other scholars. The Editorial Board is impressing and includes scientists from all over the world. The author guidelines contain a thorough explanation about article publishing requirements.

It is easy to navigate on the pages. The structure is logical and clearly understandable. There is no advertisement in the journal and all sources are cited in the bibliography. The disadvantage of this journal is comprehensive handling of all the veterinary subjects because the modern veterinary science develops into narrow fields of study. The veterinarians and researchers read mostly the texts which are related and necessary for they work and prefer specialised journals.

Estonian Journal of Eath Sciences: http://www.kirj.ee/earthsciences

The Estonian Journal of Earth Sciences is an international scientific journal published by the EstonianAcademy of Sciences in collaboration with Tallinn University of Technology, the University of Tartu, and the Geological Survey of Estonia. The journal will publish papers covering the whole field of Earth sciences, including, besides different geological disciplines, also geography and oceanography having certain connection with North Europe and the Baltic area in particular.

The first issue of the Estonian Journal of Earth Sciences appeared in March 2007. The journal is a continuation of the Proceedings of the Estonian Academy of Sciences, which has been published since 1952, with Geology as a separate series of the Proceedings since 1978.

The journal publishes primary research and review papers in the English language. All articles are provided with short Estonian summaries. The journal is intended for researches and experts in the field of geosciences

All papers to be published in the journal are peer reviewed internationally.

The journal is an open access publication, also the journal is published in print version. The journal is published quarterly. Electronic journal is published in PDF format, abstract, references are in  HTML format. Journal of Data Science: http://www.jds-online.com/

The journal seems to be reliable: the publisher is ColumbiaUniversity in New York. The journal is peer-revised, in English and in Chinese, too. Probably therefore most articles are written by American, and Chinese (Taiwan) scientists and experts. The journal appeared first in 2003 and has been published regularly four numbers per year since then. The web version is free of charge, editorial board promises to „send their first technical response in 2 weeks, and reach a decision in 3 months“. The web design was modest and easy to surf. Some abstracts were not very clear because of html codes in them. Full texts were fortunately in PDF-format. After a quick revision I am sure, the methods and theories, described in the journal were all very actual and novel. There are a lot of medicine articles. For me the articles are too difficult.

Unfortunately most open-access journals I met do not have the „impact factor“ index, which is very important in the evaluation of a scientist’s work.

Agronomy Research: http://www.eau.ee/~agronomy/

The journal of Agronomy Research is published by EstonianUniversity of Life Sciences. Online issues are a bit old, as the newest material is from the year 2010. Hopefully, the volume 9 from the year 2011 is coming online soon.  It is also possible to download the journal for  free.

The journal is targeted at researchers and experts and the authors of the articles are also researchers and experts. All sources are cited in the bibliography. The purpose of the publication is to distribute research findings. In my opinion, the journal of Agronomy Research is a good place to publish research results of our university and scientific partners’ in the region.

Another interesting part of the publication is a conference on “Biosystems Engineering”. The authors of the conference are scientists and lecturers. The language that is used in the articles is not a high level English, but can be used as an example of how to write scientific texts.  However, the language that is used needs expert knowledge on specific terms

The positive line in this journal is the minimal amount of advertising and the good quality of downloadable “PDF” documents.

HortScience http://hortsci.ashspublications.org/

The journal is published by the American Society for Horticultural Science. Since the journal’s aim is to apprise scientific and industry developments of significant research, education, or extension findings or methods, it is intended to the horticultural scientists as well others interested in horticulture. Therefore the journal readers can be without special agrucultural education as well as much respected professors. The publications are on a large scale the research reports, which are sent to editors for certain purpose to publish but I found also conference abstracts.

The journal editorial board is composed mostly of researches who are active in  different USA universities so that all of them are native English language speakers. The editor in chief is proffessor from the University of Maryland but unortunately I couldn’t find her/his exact research area. Other editors operated in the field of horticulture, crop research (in addition, the same person also deals with irrigation management, watershed stewardship) and medicine.

It appears that the information available in the journal is reliable because one or more professional experts are included, in addition to the editors, on each field of study. Navigation on the journal page is quite easy because there is not many disturbing adverts or comments. The article can be found by quick or advanced search. It seems to be a good online journal to get a quick view on horticultural sciences.

Structural Survey: http://www.emeraldinsight.com/journals.htm?issn=0263-080X

The journal is a professional one and is intended for market professionals, especially for civil engineers, who are involved with technical conditions of buildings.

Emerald Group Publishing Limited, hereby and after Emerald, as a publisher is a well-known producer on the scientific journal publishing market. It was founded in 1967 and has been in the public eyes for already more than 40 years. In this case and thanks to the huge number of different journals published by Emerald its reliability and trustworthiness are out of any doubt, the Emerald is a real high credit publisher. The trustworthiness of Emerald is also based on the on the big list of various agencies and institutions, like SCOPUS, Electronic Collections Online, Construction and Building Abstracts,  Academic Search Complete etc, who are indexing journals edited by Emerald. Unfortunately the well-known Thompson Reuters is absent beside the list of indexing institutions.

All scientific journals edited by Emerald are, as a rule, the peer-reviewed journals. For management of peer-reviewing procedure each journal has established certain structures like editorial committees or independent and commonly anonymous referees’ structures. On the other hand the peer-reviewing process is founded on the high credit peer-reviewer body that will work in the groups of two referees while the editorial staff of journal has troubles with actuality, originality or other tendencies linked with the paper submitted for publishing.

Editorial team of the current journal is chaired by Professor Michael Hoxley from NottinghamTrentUniversity. The editorial activity is supported by engagement of a board of co-editors, including 16 different market professionals, first of all representatives of academic institutions around the world.

Analyzing scientific journals it is important to describe the nature and environment of authors who are submitting their papers for publishing. Here it is necessary to underline the fact that editorial policy of the journal does not limit the market of possible authors: anyone who has a paper prepared under the journals requirements and provided with needed information, may demand its publishing.

Structural Survey, as other journals of Emerald does not include any advertisements if we do not consider the new books presentations as an advertisement.

As all websites of Emerald’s journals, the Structural Survey’s home page is built up clearly that makes navigation easy. It is essential to announce that in spite of the clarity of the home page only abstracts of the published papers are available, the papers themselves must be ordered especially or they are opened only for current orders. All journals numbers edited 4 times a year from 1983 up till today can be ordered.
